SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY
Open House at SDSU Dairy Research and Training Facility
For release: 2-14-2007
Contact: Arnold Hippen, (605) 688-5490
The SDSU Dairy Science Department will host an open house at its Dairy Research and Training Facility from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 3.
The SDSU Dairy Research and Training Facility is located north of Brookings, one and one-half miles north of the intersection where the U.S. Highway 14 Bypass crosses Medary Avenue. It’s on the west side of the road.
Associate professor Arnold Hippen said the event is one way the SDSU Department of Dairy Science is showing appreciation to dairy producers who have made contributions to the Heifers for State campaign, as well as to the South Dakota dairy industry for its ongoing support.
Heifers for State allows a producer to donate a dairy heifer that is subsequently sold to raise money for needed activities or improvements in the SDSU Department of Dairy Science. A donated animal can be of any breed and any age, as long as it is a dairy heifer with a pedigree.
Area dairy producers and friends of the SDSU Dairy Science Department are invited to tour the facility and view the recent remodeling of SDSU’s freestall barn.
Gary Lemme, dean of SDSU’s College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, and Director John Kirby of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station will welcome guests at 1 p.m.
Undergraduate students in dairy science will be available to share about their experiences in the dairy science program. Graduate students and dairy science faculty and staff will be available to discuss recent research in dairy science, including information on feeding corn distillers grains and other byproduct feeds.
SDSU ice cream will be served. Call the SDSU Department of Dairy Science at (605) 688-4116 for more information about the open house, or about the Heifers for State program. -30-
