A new publication draws on South Dakota State University research to offer fungicide recommendations for South Dakota wheat.
A grant from the South Dakota Wheat Commission helped fund the research and the publication.

SDSU Extension Plant Pathologist Larry Osborne and SDSU small grains pathologist Jeff Stein co-authored this publication to help South Dakota growers select the most effective fungicides to use against wheat diseases such as tan spot, powdery mildew, stem rust, leaf rust, Fusarium head blight or scab, leaf spot/blotch complex, and stripe rust.
“As is true for all of South Dakota’s major crops, fungicides are most effective when used as part of an integrated disease management strategy,” Osborne cautioned. “Foliar fungicides alone are not the most effective means of preserving healthy plants. Well-adapted, disease- resistant varieties should be used wherever possible and combined with good cultural practices such as crop rotation, disease-free seed, and optimal planting dates. In addition, effective crop scouting methods will help producers make sound decisions about when and where to apply fungicides.”
The four-page publication includes a table rating products from poor to excellent in how they perform against different diseases. It includes treatment rates and estimated costs per acre.
